the opportunity for sightseeing in this "three river town". At
1200hrs you can listen to an organ concert (except on Sundays
and public holidays) on the largest church organ in the world
at the Cathedral.
Day
2. PASSAU - ENGELHARTSZELL 21ml(34km)
Collect cycles in the morning and start cycling at the southern
side of the Danube to reach the ferry at Obernzell. There you
can cross the Danube or continue cycling on the southern side
to Engelhartszell, where you can find the only Trappist monastery
in Austria.
Day
3. ENGELHARTSZELL - LINZ 35ml(57km)
The
first highlight of the landscape is the famous Schlogen Danube
Loop which offers wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.
Then you cycle through the villages of Aschach, Wilhering and
Ottensheim to Linz, the capital of Upper Austria. You have enough
time for a stroll through this enchanting old town with its many
interesting sights.
Day 4. LINZ - GREIN
40ml(65km)
You leave Linz and go on cycling via Mauthausen or Enns, the oldest
town of Austria to Wallsee. Continuing via Ardagger you reach
the beautiful old bargee town of Grein. This is the start of the
Strudengau. You can visit the castle, the oldest municipal theatre
still open and
the maritime museum.
Day 5. GREIN - MARBACH/EMMERSDORF
33ml(54km)
Today you cycle through the Strudengau on the southern side
of the Danube to the old Roman town of Ybbs where you cross the
river on the dam of the power station at Ybbs-Persenbeug. You
reach Marbach by riding through the Nibelungengau and after Marbach
the pilgrimage centre of Maria Taferl greets you from the hills
above.
Day 6. MARBACH/EMMERSDORF
- SPITZ/KREMS
22ml(36km)
Depending on your location, first you ride through Klein Pochlarn
and then cycle via the dam of the power station to reach Melk.
This town is the highlight of the day because you can visit the
wonderful baroque Benedictine convent which is situated on a high
rock above the Danube. In Melk there is the beginning of the most
popular part of the Danube, the Wachau - well known for its choice
wines. You pass through some of the traditional small villages
of the Wachau to reach the best known town of this area - Durnstein,
where Richard the Lion Heart was once taken captive.
Day 7. SPITZ/KREMS - TRAISMAUR/TULLN
25ml(40km)
You
will be surprised and delighted by the scenic beauty and cultural
attractions as you journey alongside the river. Soon you will
arrive in Krems, the end of the Wachau. There you cross the Danube
again and ride on to Traismauer or Tulln.
Day 8. TRAISMAUR/TULLN - VIENNA 21ml(36km)
Today you ride the last part of this journey on the way to Vienna,
the capital of Austria. Before reaching Vienna you will see numerous
garden and weekend settlements and the well known Augustinian
canon convent, Klosterneuburg. The bike-path ends
only a few minutes
away from the cathedral of St. Stephans, the landmark of Vienna.
