Day
1. Arrive ASSISI
Arrive
at your hotel near Assisi. Explore this beautiful medieval town
with its flowers, fountains, little alleys, cosy squares and scenic
views. Among the many churches is the famous Basilica di San Francesco
begun two years after the saint's death and decorated by the foremost
artists of the day.
Day
2. ASSISI - TORGIANO 40ml(65km)
Spend
some of the morning
exploring Spello which has several fine churches and ancient Roman
ruins. The small village of Montefalco is the next stop. Perched
high on a hilltop it enjoys sweeping views of the Vale of Spoleto
and its sober Franciscan church, now a museum has wonderful 15th
and 16th century frescos. At Bevagna the medieval Piazza Silvestri
is the setting for two Romanesque churches. Cycle on to the ovenight
stop of Torgiano, a fortified village in medieval times famous
now for its fine wines. Visit the Lungarotti family's wine museum
and dine in their excellent restaurant.

3. CIRCULAR TOUR TO PERUGIA 25ml(40km)
Cycle to the county town of Perugia, one of Italy's best preseved
medieval hill towns. It bubbles over with life and is endowed
with a multitude of aristocratic palaces, churches, museums and
galleries. It will be the unforgettable part of your Umbrian experience.
Day 4. TORGIANO - SAN FELICIANO 31ml(50km)
A
hilly ride today is rewarded by magnificnt views over Lake Trasimeno
and its islands. The fourth largest lake in Italy it's miles of
placid water and reed lined shores have a tranquil, melancholy
beauty. It offers swimming, fishing and other water sports together
with delicious local produce and fine wines. Stay overnight at
a hotel just outside the small fishing village of San Feliciano.

5. SAN FELICIANO - UMBERTIDE 25ml(40km)
Travel north through unspoilt countryside to the historic town
of Umbertide located in the centre of Umbria at a strategic crossing
of the River Tiber. There is a walled city centre with narrow
lanes and a central square and castle or Rocca with a majestic
tower,
all that remains of the 14th century castle.

6. UMBERTIDE - GUBBIO 34ml(55km)
Cycle
to Gubbio which vies with Assisi for the title of Umbria's most
medieval town. Situated on the slopes of Monte Ingino it overlooks
the forest swathed Appenine Hills. Among its steep twisting streets
and terra-cotta tiled houses are palaces, the 13th century pink
cathedral, a Roman theatre and 827metres high is the monastery
of St Ubaldo, accessible by cable car.

7. GUBBIO - ASSISI 34km(55km)
During
this last day you cycle through the rolling still-life landscape
of Umbria to reach Assisi once more. Cycle through the town centre
past most of the important monuments. Perhaps pause for some more
sightseeing before continuing to your hotel in Viole.
