Day
1. Arrive CASTLE DOUGLAS
Meet at B&B accommodation for route briefing and cycle provisiom. Opportunity for a short local cycle to Threave Castle or the National Trust for Scotland’s popular Threave Garden depending on arrival time. The bustling market town, with its ‘unique shopping experience’ including a small brewery, is an ideal place to start and end the tour.
Day 2. CASTLE DOUGLAS - KIRKCUDBRIGHT 10/29ml(16/47km)
The shortest way to Kirkcudbright is 10 miles but we recommend a route by Loch Ken and the Galloway Kite Trail. Barstobrick monument and tea room is an ideal refreshment stop before heading for the village of Twynholm with a chocolate factory and David Coulthard racing car museum to look around. Kirkcudbright artists’ town with Maclellan’s castle, Stewartry museum and art galleries is popular tourist haven in the summer – especially at the weekly outdoor ‘Scottish Nights’.
Day 3. KIRKCUDBRIGHT - GATEHOUSE OF FLEET 18ml(29km)
Today’s route more or less follows the coast all the way to Gatehouse of Fleet with several detour options to beauty spots along the way. Borgue village is half-way but a seaside picnic is recommended at Brighouse Bay, Carrick Shore or Sandgreen beach along the way. To top it off, an ice cream at Cream o’Galloway farm and visitor centre is a must. Gatehouse, beside the River Fleet has Cardoness Castle looking out to sea, a kilt making centre and an interesting old cotton mill. A selection of good pubs and restaurants are here.
Day 4. GATEHOUSE OF FLEET - CASTLE DOUGLAS 20/25ml(32/40km)
Cycle up the Fleet valley glen before heading over the hill along a beautiful moorland and open woodland route with excellent views to Laurieston village. The red kite feeding station and viewing centre is a wonderful sight around 2pm each day with around 30 red kites swooping down for food. A countryside route takes you across the River Dee to give you the opportunity to visit Threave Garden and Threave Castle or even the local Sulwath brewery for a tour if you didn’t have time on your arrival day.
